Airports

Remediation of LNAPLs at Airports - Environmental SolutionsSoil and groundwater contaminated with light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs) are quite common at airports. Petroleum products such as diesel and jet fuel have resulted in contamination due to:

  • improper handling
  • accidental discharges
  • spills during transportation and fueling operations
  • leaks from storage containers
  • improper disposal

When petroleum products are released into the subsurface, contamination can take on different forms. The free-phase petroleum can volatilize in the subsurface, releasing contaminated vapors. The contaminants may also attach themselves to the soil constituents, a process known as sorption. Finally, contaminants may dissolve in the groundwater making the compounds more mobile.
