Thousands of bulk storage facilities exist in North America, and are used for the storage of petroleum products; storage tanks can be located underground or aboveground. Contamination of the soil and groundwater surrounding bulk storage facilities is quite common, due to:
- corrosion of tanks and piping
- leaks occurring during filling, emptying, and draining operations
- over-filling of tanks
Large volumes of petroleum products exist are present at storage facilities, vastly increasing the potential for contamination.
When petroleum products are released into the subsurface, contamination can take on different forms. The free-phase petroleum can volatilize in the subsurface, releasing contaminated vapors. The contaminants may also attach themselves to the soil constituents, a process known as sorption. Finally, contaminants may dissolve in the groundwater, making the compounds more mobile.
